The truth is we cannot underestimate the power of making Du’a for our children. Because the Du’a of a parent on the child has an immense impact, especially as mothers. So, Insha Allah, I’d relate to certain stories from the Qur’an and Sunnah. I’ll share some stories of Du’as made for children who grew up, lead and left a legacy in this Dunya.
From the Qur’an
“…رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ…” “O Lord, grant me a good offspring, you are indeed, a good hearer of supplication”
This is the Du’a of Zakariyyah(AS) and when you read the full story, you’d be amazed by how his Du’a was accepted. In the Qur’an, you’d also find many places where the prophet Ibrahim (AS) made so many different Du’as for his offspring and his generation to come. Which as parents we need to search for those Du’as within the Qur’an and hold on to them.
Maryam AS
The Mother of Maryam (AS) was Hannah, and her father was Imran, May Allah be pleased with them. They didn’t have any children before Maryam. One day, Maryam’s mother saw a bird feeding its chick. Seeing that, her longing for a child grew intense. She made a sincere prayer to Allah to grant her offspring. In that prayer, she made a promise to Allah that if He gave her an offspring, she would dedicate her child to His worship and in taking care of the holy places in Bayt Al-Maqdis. Her Du’a was accepted, and soon she became pregnant. The Quran narrates her response in the following verse:
[Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of ‘Imran said, “My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.” [Quran 3:35]
And after giving birth Hannah said (as narrated in the Quran):
But when she delivered her, she said, “My Lord, I have delivered a female.” And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered, “And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allah ].” [Quran 3: 36]
After the birth of Maryam (AS), Her mother decided that she would fulfill her promise and give the newly born child to the service of Bayt-Al Maqdis. You can find details of the event mentioned in the Quran. Due to the barakah of her parents Du’a through Allah’s will, Allah made Maryam (AS) be the best pious woman in her own time. I won’t be going into many details. But, I would really want you to go learn about her story as a reminder also.
From the Sunnah
Children are a trust from Allah. Not only must we attend to their physical, intellectual and spiritual needs, we must also keep them from harm. Protecting our children from the evil in this world is the responsibility of every parent, with the child-abuse and kidnapping becoming rampant. Which is why I also warn parents about the issue of showcasing your child or life on social media. It might look fun, but you have no idea what the bad consequences are. EVIL EYE is real!
The Prophet(PBUH) used to say the following to seek the protection of Allah for his beloved Hassan and Hussain:
I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, and every beast, and from every evil eye. (Al-Bukhari 4/119)
You should also try saying this Du’a over your children in the morning, evening and before leaving the house. And when you check the blessed Sunnah of our Nabiy, you’ll find many other beautiful Du’as.
Our great Scholars
Looking deep into the lives of our great scholars in Islam. The likes of Imam Shafi, Imam Malik, and Imam Bukhari to mention a few, were raised by single mothers. And there are many more pious individuals, whos their parents Du’a manifested in their lives. I’ll highlight the story of Imaam Bukhari(RA) with regards to his mothers Du’a. It’s a story that Inspires me.
Mother of Imaam Bukhari
Imam Muhammad Al-Bukhari is a distinguished scholar of Hadith whose famous book. Sahih Al-Bukhari is used by Muslims to learn about the actions and the sayings of the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him. Imam Bukhari’s father died whilst he was an infant and thus he was raised by his mother. He became blind at the age of 12 and despite efforts by many doctors at the time, none of the treatment restored his eyesight. His mother, described as a righteous woman of impeccable character prayed continuously to Allah for the restoration of his sight.
Allah SWT accepted her prayers and one night in her dream, she was visited by Ibrahim (Peace Be Upon Him) who told her, “Allah has restored the sight of your son because of your intense and beautiful invocations.” In the morning when Imam Bukhari woke up, his eyesight was fully restored. This happened at the age of 16 but what is incredible to learn, is that during the four years when he was blind, he memorized 500,000 Hadiths because his mother would read them to him until he memorized it.
When you reflect upon his story you will learn a lot of lessons. Some of which are: It teaches you never underestimate the power of dua. Which also portrays the importance of persistence in the Dua’s you make. And the power of the Du’as we make for our offsprings. So, just go through and derive more and more lessons.
Lastly, from the moment you conceive, through the phases of your pregnancy keep making Du’a. There’s huge barakah in making Du’a for your offspring, never underestimate it. Once Again! Thank you for dropping by. Looking forward to interacting with you in the comment section.
Alhamdulillah! May Allah grant us offsprings, that will be the coolness of our eye. Ameen.
